Chapter Seventeen

When Oscar came to the campsite to fix a broken fence, Christi knew she needed to talk to him. They hadn’t spoken properly since that kiss, and she didn’t want to destroy everything between them. Besides, she needed some help, and she didn’t know who else to turn to.

"Hey," she said, squinting into the sunlight as she approached him, a mug of tea in her hand.

He stopped what he was doing and wiped his hand across his forehead.

"Hey."

"Thought you might need a drink," she said, balancing the cup on an unbroken fence post. "Hot today."

He nodded. "Hopefully it’ll stay like this for the whole of August," he said. "The campsite will be heaving then."

"I hope so," Christi said. "Bookings are way up."

"All thanks to you, I’m sure," he said, his lips twitching into a smile.

"Us," Christi said, feeling awkward under his intense gaze.

"No more projects to rope me into?" he asked.

"Well…" Christi said. Part of her wanted to deny it, to apologise for the previous weekend, to not ask him for anything, but when he gave her such a perfect opportunity to ask.

"I’ve got a hot tub arranged, I just need to collect it," she said. "It’s in a village called Goveton… I don’t think it’s too far?"

Oscar shrugged. "It’s a bit of a drive, but not too bad," he said. "I can find some time this afternoon, if you like."

"Really?" Christi said with a grin, her awkwardness temporarily forgotten. "Oh, that would be amazing."

"Do you know how to set up a hot tub?" Oscar asked.

"Well, no…"

Oscar laughed and she was pleased to hear it sounded like his normal chuckle. "I thought not. Luckily, I’ve helped with a few."

"Thank you, Oscar," she said, wanting to throw her arms around him but knowing it would give mixed signals. "I really appreciate it."

"Although your aunt said something about showers…"

Christi blushed. "Well, that’s not something I’m sure about yet, I–"

"I can’t do those, I’m afraid."

Christi had begun to believe Oscar could do anything, and she felt her face falling before she had a chance to stop it.

"I can probably find someone who can…" he said.

"Oh, you don’t need to do that," Christi said.

"Can’t have you looking all disappointed," Oscar said. "Let me finish this fence, and we’ll head out to get that hot tub."

As she headed back to the house to check what needed to be done next, she realised she was going to have to spend the car journey in close proximity to Oscar, and she hoped it would not be awkward.

"I’m running an errand with Oscar," Christi told her aunt when she ran into her back at the house. "Is that okay?"

Aunt Olivia nodded. "Of course. There’s a big group checking in tomorrow morning, if you’re okay to be up to help? No late-night drinks tonight, maybe?"

She giggled and Christi cringed. She highly doubted there would be any more drinks with Oscar, and she was sad about that – but she couldn’t tell her aunt that without admitting to the kiss.
